Problem Statement

In Kenya's rural and arid regions, brucellosis is a neglected zoonotic disease that severely undermines food security, economic resilience, and public health. The bacteria suppresses milk yields and causes widespread livestock miscarriages, stripping vulnerable pastoralist families of vital income and nutrient-dense foods. Furthermore, undiagnosed human infections severely strain local healthcare systems and deplete already limited household budgets through prolonged, debilitating illness and ineffective medical treatments.

Methods

In this paper, I proposed a targeted, county-led program to vaccinate 4- to 12-month-old heifers using the Brucella abortus S19 vaccine within Kenya’s high-risk Arid and Semi-Arid Lands. This intervention relies heavily on Community Animal Health Workers to deliver the cold-chain vaccines directly to dispersed pastoralist herds at watering points and local markets. Additionally, the vaccination campaigns are paired with culturally aware community education focused on boiling and pasteurizing raw milk to safely eliminate major transmission pathways.

Experience

Developing this comprehensive public health proposal and presenting it at both the New Jersey Youth Institute and the Global Youth Institute was an incredibly transformative educational journey. Earning the First Prize in the Global Challenge Award showed me the value in understanding the complex intersections of agricultural policy, veterinary science, and human sociology. Ultimately, this research experience solidified my passion for interdisciplinary solutions and demonstrated how culturally aware interventions can profoundly protect global food security.
